JAY-Z AND ROCAFELLA TAKE OVER HOT 97 (2001): PART 1

rocafella_since

In 2001, way before people documented every single move of every single person every single day for youtube, a crazy invasion happened.  The good old days when people actually broke records and artist on the radio. Jay-Z called Funkmaster Flex and told him that he wanted to bring all his new artist up and Blackout on the radio. I had a bullshit camera with me that day, but I was in the room that everyone was rappin in, so I got all the visuals but all the audio was all acapella. I finally tracked down the audio from the radio and linked it with the video. This is one of many parts I will be putting up. This shit is crazy.

  1. roc-a-fella 4 life

  2. This is EXACTLY why I rock with you. You are in the game but you still have a fan’s love. I know you must have been GASSED that night. HAHA

You keep the heat coming. Quiet as kept you are part of the change thats coming in the game

  3. CLASSIC !
Daaamn I miss the old Jay…

  4. got’damb.. cipha this is some historical sh*t you blessing us w/ right here.. True hiphop at its purest form, when RAPPERS used to black out on flex show b/c they knew that was the main outlet.

  5. Yo i remember this ish….

    “He’s only 15!!”

“All he had to do was walk a block and a half!”

“Stop playin all these happy beats. All theses xylophones and ish”

  6. I used to listen to this session alot back then. This was one of the great moments of Roc-A-Fella’s Dynasty years. Freeway and the rest of the cats from Philly was really a breath of fresh to the rap game and I think they changed the way average rappers started to flow. Even Jay-Z started to spit like Young Chris and would whisper certain lines etc. Rappers should really start to go to the radio to break their records again. There are alot of hot records that I still associate with Flex dropping bombs and doing cut-backs on them. Thanks for uploading the video.

  7. I remember this like yesterday
    good look

  8. Man you are crazy for putting this up here, i had this whole session on CD, and of course it doesn’t play anymore. I didn’t know that they had video of this. This was the first time I became an official Freeway Fan! you gotta put the rest of them up here

  9. I have all this freestyles on my IPOD and listen to it all the time. My brother tells me that I’m living in the past but every time I listen to these freestyles its like I’m listening to them for the first time. This was a great time in hip hop and a great night.

  10. Cipha, I acutally want those in acapella, you know what a talented DJ like me could do with those? I put my email address in the comment window if you dont see it then post it up on dontgetgassed!

  11. Thanks for posting that!!! Classic material right there!!! its a revelation to see what the video looks like, after listening to the track so much.

Can’t wait till you drop pt 2!

  12. Yo Cipha!

I give you much props on posting this video. This was such a special moment in my life because I remember sitting in my room that night listening to the radio when they was spitting. And I also remember Jay screaming the infamous line, “GET YA TAPES READY!”

When he said that shit, I went into a FRENZY trying to find a blank cassette tape to record that shit and I STILL have that tape TO THIS DAY!

Thank you once again for posting this, Ciph! I’ll be on the lookout for part 2!

  13. So wait wait wait…Ciph…u have had this video all this time and all u needed was the audio to sync it up and make it complete? Son do u know how long all of these freestyles have been floating around the Internet? Mad people have it. U coulda asked anyone. I play these all the time. Like it’s an album. Props for putting in the work to release these though. I didn’t even know video existed until now.

  14. @ dee phunk : you know im mad late on this blog shit. I had no reason to do anything with it. I forgot i had it. wait til I out the videos up from the TUNNEL night club…..some crazy shit there.

  15. @ Cipha U INSTANTLY GOT ME HYPED. Wow. Now that’s something I would like to see as well.

I only went to the Tunnel once when it was *the* spot on Sundays. And that was enough for me. I’m not ashamed to say I was not built for that place. That night I got searched prison-style, escaped a near violent episode near the door when someone was heated that they couldn’t get in (I think he wanted to shoot the bouncer for real) and I watched someone get their ass TOSSED UP by security for starting an altercation inside. Security converged on him like the shadows in Ghost when they are about to take you to hell.

  16. please add part 2 im so hype i didnt know u took a vid i still rock this whole session

  17. I got this shh on CD man. Cipha you did it with this one homeboy. Good looking.
