A bit of clarification regarding your guys’ discussion of Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi, in fact, was FOR the passing of the bill. In the high level meetings with the Paulson, Bernanke and the other leadership, she promised that the majority of the House Democrats would vote Yes, which they did. Now, minority leader John Boehner (Bay-nuhr) was supposed to deliver a few, just enough to get the bill passed. Pelosi’s speech on the floor of the House of Reps was in fact trying to URGE the Congress to pass the bill but she was, on a sidebar, expressing the sorry nature of having to pass a bill like this, and she played hardball by naming Bush and the Republicans as mostly responsible (a debatable point). The House Republicans claim that it was Pelosi calling them out that made them salty at the last minute and led them to vote against the bill. (Word is however that former Speaker of the House Newt Gringrich strong-armed some of the House Repubs into voting against it when they were all ready to vote for it.)
