You love television, as does Rosenberg. And here’s my suggestion for the BIG IDEA. It’s not brilliant, it may in fact be just mad simple. But I think you need to run with the TV-oriented segments. TV trivia, Joe Brown, etc.. Get guests not only from music but TV. Moreover, YOU ARE ALSO ON TV. Why not cross-market when you yourself are part of both? People kill for such “ins” for cross marketing but cannot since they don’t have a connection. But you are IT. Now one concern might be that you are relying too heavily on another medium. But TV is a medium that creates a “public,” by which I mean you have a group of people with a shared reference point like no other. Radio cannot do this as much since it is highly specialized. That is, there are “hip hop” stations as opposed to “pop” stations and etc. But with the TV angle, you can go across listenership USING TV viewership. The trivia game I thought was pretty fun. You just have to have a way of ensuring that these callers actually know a thing or two about TV. Maybe when they call in you can have them answer an initial set of questions so that they are up to snuff? (Just an idea. It may impossible.)
Also, since private is the new public, as evidenced by the rise of blogging and now micro-blogging(Twitter), I say you and Rosenberg need to incorproate more of your “personal” tastes for the morning show a la Juan Ep. Now this doesn’t have to be ACTUALLY personal. What people are attracted to is not intimacy itself but the allure of intimacy. And I think one of the ways that you can enhance this presentation of privacy is to step the HOT97 website and have a Cipha and Rosenberg PAGE that is actually something that has CONTENT. And this may seem like a pain in the ass but hire an intern, an employee, something! It’s important because the success to any kind of media-oriented endeavor is to be across media not solely stuck to one. You and Rosenberg do this already by posting the show sup every day(which I reallllly appreciate). But why not do it also on the website of the biggest hip hop station in the country. It makes NO sense. There may be logistics and bureaucracy involved but as someone who has consulted for a company or two (though not about radio but mostly real estate development and social organization), I feel like that’s where the most opportunity is lost.
Anyway, sorry to take up so much space. But I beasted on this comment because I’m a fan. Thanks for the return of Juan Epstein.
